Art Classes

Topolski Life Drawing

Wednesdays 7 – 9pm

Topolski Studio holds weekly life drawing sessions, involving a ‘cardboard extravanganza’ set inspired from a historial period or particular artist which our models interact with. It is a class that encourages imaginative thinking, yet still has roots in the traditions of the life room.

Classes cost £12 or £10 concessions, and your place is reserved by sending an email over by Wednesday at midday. To book our next class, or for more information contact us. Topolski Studio is a charity and therefore does not make a profit from these sessions. Our aim is to use this programme to enhance the study of life drawing and all proceeds go to providing art education.

It is a small class so you can comfortably move around during the workshop and take up different perspectives to suit you, but please book early to guarantee your place.

Inspired by our location in master draughtsman Feliks Topolski’s South Bank Studio, we seek to revive his commitment not only to continual drawing, but also for throwing open his studio door and welcoming all intrigued with art-making to share in his passion. In ode to the technical rigour and classical training that enabled his fluid and prolific sketching, our classes dissect aspects of capturing the body in a number of contexts so that participants can confidently extend their practice beyond the studio.

Use of easels, drawing boards, pencils, ink, charcoal, chalk, putty rubbers and graphite are included in the price of the class. Cartridge and sugar paper is available to buy at cost price (10p-20p per sheet). You are very welcome to bring your own materials.

The classes cater to levels of experience, therefore the tuition is based around each individual. The aim is to engage the participants and play with the idea of what life drawing can be. Each session will have a theme and a focus, which you can choose to take inspiration from or follow your own interests. The classes are run by Laura Fitton and other guest tutors.

We are a gender sensitive community that is constantly evolving, and our sessions welcome all people – from art students to enthusiasts and professionals – who wish to hone and refresh their graphic knowledge of the human form.

There are refreshments – tea, coffee and biscuits – halfway through the class. Informal drinks at Bar Topolski (the former site of Topolski’s ‘Memoir of the Century’) often follow.

Topolski Studio is situated in Feliks Topolski’s first artist’s studio on the South Bank in one of the railway arches (158) underneath Hungerford Bridge facing the London Eye. Please note that our entrance is located behind the security barrier of the Southbank Centre’s loading area, just off Belvedere Road. This is around the back of the restaurant Ping Pong, which is on the Festival Terrace, opposite the Royal Festival Hall. See the map in the bottom right hand corner.

Please tell the Southbank Centre security guard that you are going to Topolski Studio and they will direct you. If you have any trouble accessing the Studio, please call 020 7082 8071020 7082 8071.
