Topolski Century has run art classes for the local community since May 2009.
From January 2010 to the present, our weekly community art workshop, 50+ Art Club, is facilitated by an artist and attended regularly by local older people. The club has been proven to increase participants’ social interaction and emotional wellbeing as well as helping them to develop new skills. This led to a group exhibition of participants’ work in August 2011 attended by over 100 people.
In Autumn 2010, eleven young people wishing to access further or higher education in the arts undertook ten weeks of professional training in Portfolio Preparation aimed at helping them develop portfolios to support their applications. All of the young people rated the course as being geared towards their needs, well designed with clear goals, helpful feedback and motivating activities, and in the words of one student, with “lots of attention to personal needs.”
Topolski Century’s 2010 Try Drawing course helped local people overcome their fears of picking up a pencil to learn about line, tone, form and mark making. By the end of the course, all participants felt more confident and had gained basic skills in the art of drawing from observation. Following on from our twice weekly Life Drawing classes which ran from May 2009- June 2010, in Spring 2011, Topolski Century ran a Portraiture course introducing local participants to basic sketching techniques and anatomical observation.
