Election Chronicle

Topolski Studio worked with nine young artists to report the 2015 General Election and its aftermath through drawing.

The artists, who all previously attended the Studio’s Residency Programme, captured the highs and lows of the campaign, working together to produce, hand-print and distribute a special edition ‘Election Chronicle’, a broadsheet of reportage drawing chronicling the politics of the twenty-first century, just as artist Feliks Topolski did of the twentieth. There will be copies of the new Chronicle available at the exhibition.

From 1953-1982, Topolski hand-printed over 2,300 of his on the spot drawings as his broadsheet Chronicles. Covering events from the 1956 American Presidential Election to the Labour Party Shadow Cabinet before their election victory in 1964, the Chronicles bristle with comment and observation about the people, politics and events of the time. It was distributed to over 2,000 subscribers around the world including museums, universities, libraries and private collections.

Topolski Studio’s Election Chronicle reports on the Green insurgency in Bristol and Norwich, UKIP’s campaign to take South Thanet, Labour’s battle against the Liberal Democrats in Bermondsey and Old Southwark among other electoral battlegrounds. By following the issues and events of the national campaign to local activists canvassing door to door and getting out the vote on polling day, they have produced a truly unique drawn record of the 2015 General Election.

The exhibition of their work ran from Friday 11th December to Tuesday 15th December 2015 at Topolski Studio.
